DID YOU KNOW:
ADVENT: Dictionary definition: Awaiting the arrival of a notable person or thing..
Advent is a season observed in most Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas as well as the return of Jesus at the Second Coming. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". Latin adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used to refer to the Second Coming of Christ. For Christians, the season of Advent anticipates the coming of Christ from three different perspectives: in the flesh in Bethlehem, in our hearts daily, and in glory at the end of time. The season offers the opportunity to share in the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah, and to be alert for his Second Coming.
Advent Sunday (2nd December this year)  marks the beginning of the Church’s Liturgical Year.

“WHAT’S  ON”  THIS  WEEK”
TODAY, there will be a mandatory retiring collection for The Retired Clergy Fund.
ALSO: the bags usually distributed to collect items for the Bottle Stall and Tombola for the Christmas Fayre will be issued.  It was agreed to distribute paper bags rather than plastic ones as part of our effort to reduce plastic waste.
NEXT SUNDAY: is Remembrance Sunday. Fr Phil will not be able to offer the 10.00am  Mass as he had been asked to attend the Civic Service in Oldham.  Fr Callum Brown from St. Edward’s Lees will stand in for him. A poppy wreath will be laid at the church war memorial.

“SMILE – A – WHILE”
Why couldn't they play cards on the Ark?  Because Noah was standing on the deck!
Which area of Palestine was the wealthiest? :  Next to the Jordan. The banks were always overflowing.
What kind of a man was Boaz before he married Ruth?  Ruthless!

THIS  WEEK’S  FEASTS
St. Willibrord: born in Yorkshire in 658, after ordination he set out to evangelise Frisia. He was made bishop and founded the see of Utrecht. He preached the Gospel in North Germany and Denmark and founded dioceses and monasteries in the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica commemorates the dedication of the Pope Cathedral in Rome. In honour of the basilica which is called “Mother and Head of all the churches of the City and the World”, this feast is observed through all the Church as a sign of unity with the Holy See.
St. Leo the Great became Pope in 440 and was a true father and shepherd of his people. He strove to protect the integrity of the faith, defended the unity of the Church and repelled or alleviated the incursions of the Huns and Vandals. He died in 461.

ITEMS  FROM  THE  PARISH  TEAM  MINUTES  HELD  IN  OCTOBER

  • At the service and meeting in the Cathedral, regarding Stage 2 of Hope in the Future, attended by Fr. Phil and other parish representatives it was clear that Stage 2 involved the putting into practice the many gifts and talents most parishes discovered they had during Stage one. Fr Phil said that he had been to a further meeting with the rest of the diocesan clergy.  At this meeting, there was an inspirational speaker who explained how problems arise when we allow the ‘how’ we put into practice a project to dominate and lose sight of the ‘why’.  The team took this onboard and agreed to keep it in mind on future projects.
  • It was agreed that the Parish Team should be expanded to include people from churches which have closed and who now worship with us.  It was agreed to consider this further after Christmas when they have settled in.
  • It was agreed to order 50 more new hymnbooks.
  • It was agreed that the sacristy should be redecorated.  Enquiries will be made to contract the work.
